Fostering Support Worker

Fixed Term, Full Time Position 

  

About the role 

Working as a Support Worker will see you encourage children and young people to achieve the best outcomes. You will have the opportunity to provide ongoing monitoring of placements with foster carers, including the transition of children and young people entering or exiting from placements. 

This is a 3 month fixed term contact with the possibility to extend.  This role specifically services the Gulf Regions including Mornington Island and Doomadgee. Staff that are local to these regions are encouraged to apply. If you are from outside these regions, you will need to have capacity for regular overnight travel.  

The office is based in Mount Isa, but workstations can be set up in another North West QLD Community.

In this role you will: 

  • Collaborate to develop, implement and conduct the recruitment for the fostering service including conducting initial interviews, conducting pre-service training and enquiries; monitor and assess carer’s ongoing suitability. 
  • Plan and action placements for children and young people, schedule and facilitate initial and ongoing care plan meetings. 
  • Provide ongoing monitoring of placements with foster carers including the transition of children and young people entering or exiting from placements. 
  • Provide support to foster carers including developing support plans, education and training needs, matters of concern, individual placements and awareness of intervention services. 
  • Work sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, children, young people, families and communities to provide culturally inclusive services and achieve sustainable outcomes within a culturally safe environment; assist to reduce the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in care; work collaboratively with communities to keep children and families safe and connected to culture. 
  • Perform position responsibilities in accordance with the Sanctuary Model of Care framework.

You have an understanding of the impacts of trauma on children, families and communities.

To be suitable for this position, your qualifications for the role will consist of: 

  • Certificate III in Protective Care, Youth or Community Services or equivalent and/or related experience with a willingness to participate in further training. 
  • Applied knowledge and understanding of child protection and out-of-home care frameworks, including knowledge of or an ability to acquire knowledge of the Child Protection Act 1999 
  • Current driver’s licence. 
  • Experience working with children who display complex to extreme behaviours; 
  • Youth work Experience in the residential care system 
  • Demonstrated experience in providing training to carers and applying assessment, crisis intervention and short-term intervention skills and therapeutic approaches; 
  • Applied knowledge and understanding of child protection and out-of-home care frameworks.
